A pet food brand is recalling some of its products due to the fear that it is contaminated with bird flu. Cat owners are being advised to look out for symptoms such as fever, low appetite, reddened eyes and difficulty breathing.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled products from Savage Pet on Saturday (March 15). This included 66 of the company’s large and small boxes of the raw chicken cat food, with a best-by date of 11152026. The potentially contaminated boxes were distributed across California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.

The boxes have handles that make the shape of a cat’s head, with the chicken one indicated by yellow colouring around Savage Pet’s logo.
The FDA is urging people to return the food to the retailer for a refund as soon as possible. Anyone who has fed the food to their cat should take them to the vet immediately if they are showing any bird flu symptoms.
The FDA said the symptoms include “fever, lethargy, low appetite, reddened or inflamed eyes, discharge from the eyes and nose, difficulty breathing, and neurological signs like tremors, stiff body movements, seizure, lack of coordination, or blindness”.

Pet owners should also keep an eye on their own health if they’ve handled the food. For humans, symptoms include “eye redness or irritation (conjunctivitis), cough, sore throat, sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, and muscle/body aches”.
The latest recall comes after Wild Coast LLC dba Wild Coast Raw recalled its Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw pet food for cats due to fears of it being contaminated with bird flu. These were sold at retailers in Washington and Oregon.
