Indian Wells produced two new champions and potential stars of the future as youth reigned in California, with and Mirra Andreeva winning the men’s and women’s titles. Draper claimed his maiden Masters 1000 victory over the ATP Tour with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Holger Rune on Sunday, capping an impressive tournament where he beat three Americans on their home turf and then stunned in the semi-final. As a result, the 22-year-old climbs into the top 10 of the ATP rankings today for the first time in his career.

Andreeva became the youngest champion at the WTA 1000 event in 25 years after the Russian teenager beat world No. 1 6-2, 4-6, 3-6 in the final. The 17-year-old had enjoyed a remarkable tournament where she also dumped out , who was ranked second in the world. Both performances offered a glimpse into the future and both can now look forward to the Miami Open, which begins later this week. Scroll down for live tennis updates from Express Sport…

Sabalenka fires shots at her former team

Indian Wells runner-up took shots at her former coach after joking she wished she had the same support system as her conqueror Mirra Andreeva.

The world No. 1 was defeated by the 17-year-old in the final in California. In her gracious post-match speech, Sabalenka congratulated her young rival – and then claimed she wished she had the same team when she was rising through the ranks.

“Mirra, congrats on an incredible run, great tournament, and great tennis. Congrats on having a great team. If I had the same team you have at your age, I’d probably be a better player by now,” she said, causing laughter from the crowd.

However, the world No. 1 wanted to clarify that she wasn’t referring to her current team. “Don’t look at my team. I have the best team right now. I mean before!

“At your age, I was struggling to find the right coach, but you got it so much earlier, that’s why you’re doing so well. Congrats, it’s amazing to see your success.

Former tennis star blasts Indian Wells bosses for ‘serious mistake’

Former tennis star Diego Schwartzman has criticised the decision to turn Indian Wells into a two-week event as a ‘serious mistake’.

Tournament officials have divided opinion by spreading out matches across two weeks, which gives players more time to rest between matches. However, Schwartzman, who retired last month from tennis, thinks it was only done to generate more revenue for events.

“It was a serious mistake. The tournaments asked for that so they could have more revenue and distribute it among more players,” he told Septimo Game.

“But in the end, if you think about where in the world the Masters 1000s are played, and forcing a player to not be able to play anything other than a Challenger in between, and not an ATP, the tours that have two 1000s in a row, which are many, is a month.

“If a player has a bad tour, not even losing both times in the first round, making the second, that’s four matches in 28 days.”
