The Oil of Cloves Company suggests cleaning “very mouldy surfaces” with white vinegar and baking soda. To apply this mould-busting solution, you will also need a long-handled tool.
For the best results, start with a clean sponge mop or a stiff broom. If using a broom, cover the bristles with a sock or stocking to create a smoother surface.
Remember to wear protective gear such as a mask and gloves to prevent contact with or breathing in the mould and to open windows in the room you’re working in.
The cleaning gurus recommended: “Wet the broom head with white vinegar and lightly sprinkle with baking soda. Scrub gently over the ceiling with the covered broom head.”

When acidic vinegar and alkaline baking soda interact, bubbles lift the mould off surfaces.
Avoid standing directly beneath mould when cleaning above a bath or shower. Instead, use the full length of the mop or broom to distance yourself from the application area.
Go back over the ceiling with a clean, damp sponge mop to remove mould and residue.
After applying your cleaning solution, wait for the area to naturally dry before tackling persistent spores again using the same method.
While this method is great for removing mould quickly, Fantastic Cleaners warned: “Your efforts to eliminate the ceiling mould will be pointless unless you take care of the source first. Mould doesn’t appear without reason, so you need to inspect the roof for any holes and possible damages.”
They warn that wall mould might indicate more serious issues, such as leaking pipes, saying: “If the mould is affecting the wall too, that could be a result of a pipe leak. Sometimes mould could remain hidden within the walls of your home and grow there unnoticed. If you are suspecting that’s the cause for the dark stains, call a specialist right away.”
In addition, they suggest methods to keep mould at bay: avoid air-drying clothes indoors, routinely check gutters and plumbing, ensure proper insulation of external walls, and enhance overall air circulation.
