Matthijs de Ligt is making sure Graeme Souness’ misfired doubts about his move last summer are ageing worse by the performance. The Netherlands international joined from Bayern Munich in a £38.5million deal last August after identified him as his priority centre-back transfer target.

De Ligt’s arrival attracted similar scepticism as Raphael Varane’s 2021 switch from Real Madrid, with many believing Bayern had a reason to sanction an exit. Souness was among the transfer’s detractors, although his decision to target the 25-year-old’s physicality during his criticism raised eyebrows. The icon made it clear that he believed De Ligt wouldn’t solve United’s need for a centre-back despite his experience and international status.

“I’m doubtful about De Ligt. He didn’t get into the national team during the Euros. He was a squad member,” Souness shared on talkSPORT.

“He’s been at two enormous football clubs, they normally don’t like to sell players. That in itself tells a story.

“I’m not sure he is what Man United needs at this time. Jonny Evans played 23 times for Man United [last season]. They desperately need a centre-half.

“I look at De Ligt; he’s a lightweight centre-half. What you want from a centre-half, first and foremost, is to defend.”

De Ligt endured an inconsistent start at Old Trafford as he settled into English football at the foundation of a severely underperforming team.

However, since replaced in November and instilled a three-at-the-back system, he has grown from strength to strength.

In another injury-stricken season among United players, the No. 4’s constant availability has been a welcome trait.

He has made 39 appearances in all competitions and featured in 27 of 29 Premier League matches, starting 23 and only missing back-to-back outings through illness.

De Ligt has proven to be a valuable leader in Amorim’s side, while other seasoned defenders have been absent due to injuries.

Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, and Jonny Evans have all endured lengthy spells away from action.

It has left De Ligt playing alongside teenage duo Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, as well as makeshift central defender Noussair Mazraoui.

The Dutchman’s clutch challenge to deny Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy from a guaranteed goal on Sunday night epitomised the defensive nouse and physicality he provides Amorim.

De Ligt may have joined United months before the Portuguese tactician’s reign commenced, but he is primed to play a crucial role at the heart of his back line beyond the current campaign.
