Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) expressed concern about the state of American democracy amid President Donald Trump’s second term as she questioned whether elections — as they currently are — will even take place in the United States in the future.
“We don’t even know what elections will look like in four years, if we will have elections,” Crockett told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday’s “State of the Union.”
Crockett’s remark came after Tapper asked if she’d support a potential primary challenge by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), whose current term runs through 2029.
Schumer has drawn fierce criticism from fellow Democrats following his role last week in helping Republicans pass a controversial spending bill, which subsequently prevented a potential government shutdown.
Crockett sidestepped giving a definitive answer to the question, though, and noted a potential challenge by Ocasio-Cortez would be “four years from now.”
“If you were asking me, at least in two years, then I would have an absolute answer,” she told Tapper. “But I can tell you that there are a lot of people that are watching his leadership in this moment. This is the moment.”
