Despite some areas of the country still experiencing freezing temperatures and frost, spring is just around the corner. According to the experts at Flymo, March 23, also known as ‘First Cut Sunday’, is the perfect day for the first cut of the year.

Resetting your lawn for the warmer months is essential and will ensure it stays healthy for the rest of the season. Julie Blades, global product manager for Flymo, has shared how to prepare your lawn for mowing and how to achieve a “flawless striped effect” once you start mowing.

How to achieve perfect lawn stripes

For a classic striped lawn look, Ms Blades suggested following a specific technique. She said: “To achieve the perfect striped lawn for First Cut Sunday, mow in straight lines, slightly overlapping each pass to maintain consistency.”

She also said having a lawn mower with a rear roller will help create that “flawless striped effect by gently pressing the grass down as you cut”.

She added: “Take your time with straight passes and avoid turning too sharply, as this can disturb the pattern.”

How to prepare your lawn for mowing

Clear debris

Before mowing, it’s important you remove debris such as twigs, leaves and other items that have built up over winter.

Debris can clog up your lawn mower and create perfect conditions for lawn diseases to thrive.

Check your mower blades

Mower blades must be sharp and well-maintained, as dull blades can tear grass and make lawns look uneven.

Always disconnect your mower from its power source before checking the blades, and wear protective gloves.

Make sure to remove build-up debris, dirt and grass clippings and check for signs of damage. If the blade is dull, you can use a file to sharpen them or replace them.

Charge your mower’s batteries

Before mowing the lawn, ensure the battery is completely charged.

Choose the right mower for your garden

Choosing the right mower will ensure your lawn remains well-maintained throughout the year.

A lightweight, compact mower is best for small gardens, while a mower with adjustable cutting heights might be better for medium-sized gardens.

Those with larger spaces might prefer a mower with a more powerful motor and a rear roller to help achieve that flawless, striped finish. A robotic mower might be better for those who want a hands-free approach.

Set the correct mowing height

Ms Blades said: “Only cutting up to a third of the grass blade in a single mow and gradually trimming length over several weeks will reduce your chance of weed infestation and a wilted lawn.

“When tackling First Cut Sunday, the temptation to be ruthless with your lawn must be resisted at the risk of ‘scalping’ the lawn completely.”
