Some fans might be surprised to learn that Burn only has nine fingers, with the 32-year-old missing a digit on his right hand. He was born with all 10 fingers but lost one in a gruesome accident when he was just 13 years of age.

It is widely understood that Burn was climbing a fence while wearing a ring on his finger. It got caught in a spike on the fence, resulting in the third finger on his right hand being completely severed off.

Burn has never publicly discussed the incident but it appears to have become something of a joke in the dressing room. Last summer, he and his team-mates were seen laughing about his missing finger during a visit to the Adidas headquarters in Germany.

Being without a finger has not hindered Burn in his football career, with the defender currently at the peak of his powers. He will be desperate to put in a solid display for as they chase Carabao Cup glory against this afternoon.

Burn recently credited Magpies boss Eddie Howe with helping him to reach his full potential, culminating with a place in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

“I just think it’s the way he leads by example,” said Burn. “It’s more about how he goes about it and does things, especially in training. I feel as if there are certain standards that he wants us to hit and that’s what he demands as us.

“I feel as if, as players, we’ve really bought into that. The way that we turn up on a Saturday is how we train all week, with the high intensity he wants from us. I feel like that breeds the mentality that you want to win games.

“You want to be at the top end of the league and you want to be in cup finals. I feel like he leads by example with that. You all see how professional he is and the amount of time he puts into things.”
