A megacity like no other, the largest in the world, this fascinating place is home to a whopping 32 million residents and is 31,815 sq miles – making it as big as Despite its size and millions of residents, it hardly has any tourists, undoubtedly leaving you spellbound thanks to having one of the most interesting topographies in the world.
Chongqing in consists of a multi-level infrastructure that’s often described as being a “city in three dimensions”. It’s the major economic and transportation hub in China that’s built on a series of mountains and valleys with a vertically sprawling cityscape where buildings cling to cliffs which are all connected by elevated roads.

Chongqing is found in southeast China and the upstream of Yangtze River and boasts of an impressive history of over 3,000 years.
At Chongqing, the boundaries between indoor and outdoor and up and down are often blurred.
That’s because this Chinese city experienced rapid urbanisation and development over the past 20 years with new infrastructure and buildings sprouting up seemingly overnight.
Metro lines appear from tunnels through the mountains, plunging straight through the middle of residential skyscrapers, sprouting from sheer slopes.

Every step in this magical city is an adventure in itself making you feel like you’ve stepped inside a cartoon thanks to its 3D cityscape vibe with urban escalators zigzagging up and elevated walkways as far as the eye can see.
Thanks to the city’s outstanding public transport network, which includes an intricate subway system, navigating your way around this sprawling metropolis is far less daunting than you’d imagine.
Head for the city’s highest point to help you get your bearings which is found at Jiefangbei which is a pedestrian area with an array of street food and snacks available.
It’s not all just towering skyscrapers here though, as Chongqing also includes a host of mountain ranges including the Daba Mountains found in the north, the Wuling Mountains in the southeast, the Wu Mountains in the east and the Dalou Mountains in the south.
A cable car across the Yangtze River and you’ll be met with stunning views of the Chongqing skyline or ride the monorail through a building, to visit the Three Gorges Museum.
Other notable spots to visit here include the Hongya Cave, which covers an area of 46,000 square miles, the People’s Liberation Monument, one of the cultural symbols and landmark attractions in Chongqing, and the region’s at Dazu Rock Carvings.
