A Greek temple found in Gloucestershire has a stunning garden with hidden tunnels and lakes offering a slice of the Mediterranean country where guests can even stay the night. The awe-inspiring temple ‘Century Doric Temple’ in Stancombe Park, Dursley, is dubbed the “secret utopia” – and is just two hours from the UK’s capital city.
Dursley is a market town in the county of Gloucestershire in the southwest of England. As per the 2021 Census, its population was roughly 7,463. The town sits in a wooded valley on the Cotswold Way in the south Cotswolds and is roughly four miles from the River Severn.

Dursley is home to an 18th-century market house, which is also the Town Hall, and a number of small shops, pubs, and cafes, including a bustling farmer’s market that operates on the second Saturday of every month.
However, what puts this quaint little town on the map is its ancient Greek-style architecture, which allows visitors to experience Greek culture without leaving the UK.
You will find this Greek temple on top of a grassy hill that overlooks a picturesque lake.

In the gardens at Stancombe Park, visitors will see the waterside Doric temple.
The setting is something out of a fairytale and was said to have inspired author Evelyn Waugh, who wrote in her novel Brideshead Revisited about a Doric temple which overlooked a lake.
Stancombe Park wrote of Doric Temple and said: “Described as the most romantic destination in Britain, this classical 19th Century Doric Temple sits above a lake in Grade 1 listed gardens.
“Whether exploring the private gardens with its tunnels, grotto or boating on the lake, this truly is a unique setting and the perfect place for a romantic break.
For visitors looking to stay a few nights here, accommodation in the Doric Temple is about £450 for a minimum of two nights and sleeps up to three guests.
The temple features a central hall with an adjoining kitchen, but the true wonder reflecting the remarkable Greek architecture is found in the master bedroom, which includes massive Doric columns.
According to one TripAdvisor review, this magical spot is ” the most romantic hideaway in all England.”
Another added: “Walking the grounds/gardens was a joy (even in January) with so many things to discover.”
