Golf star Justin Thomas has admitted that he would do ‘really weird things’ if it meant that Bud Cauley would win the Players Championship. The world No. 251 has played his way into contention to land the spoils at Sawgrass.

Play was put on pause on the final day of the competition as rain beat down on Florida and the threat of thunderstorms rose. The unplanned break has provided Cauley with a great chance to regroup after a disappointing start to the day.

heads into the enforced pause with a one-shot lead, and he will resume three-quarters of the way down the 12th. The Northern Irishman will be hoping to gently lob his next shot onto the green to set up a birdie chance, and potentially take another shot off of the field.

Cauley will also have big plans for when play gets back underway, and he has the full backing of fellow golf star Thomas. The pair played together in college in Alabama, and Thomas is rooting for his friend to land the spoils in Florida.

Speaking about his former roommate’s chances to the PGA Tour, Thomas said: “I would do some really, really weird things for Bud to win today.

“I probably wanted it too bad. I was telling Jill last night, I was like a nervous parent. I just want him to play well, so bad because I know how bad he wants it.

“And it’s a huge stage. I mean, it’s a big, big moment. So, you know, there’s a lot of golf left. He hasn’t got off to the start he’s wanted, I’m sure, but he’s right there.”

If Cauley were to reign victorious in the Players Championship then it would be the perfect final chapter to his return to golf. In 2018, he was involved in a major car accident just a matter of hours after missing the cut at the 2018 Memorial Tournament.

He underwent surgery on a collapsed lung, six broken ribs and a fractured leg. Cauley has since suffered plenty of discomfort stemming from the crash, though that hasn’t prevented him from remaining on the course and he will be hoping to cap off that torrid time with a victory on Sunday.
