Strictly Come Dancing’s Ellie Taylor talks crippling anxiety on BBC show

Comedian Ellie Taylor has candidly admitted that she went through ‘incredible anxiety’ when she appeared on . The comedian and actress appeared in the 2022 series of the dance competition alongside dance partner Johannes Radebe, where the pair made it to Week 10 before they were eliminated.

Speaking exclusively with Express Online, the Ted Lasso star was quizzed about whether she had received any advice before entering . She also opened up about who her biggest competition was, joking that she was her own worst enemy and ‘had zero dance experience.’

“A few people gave me advice – I think it was largely based around trying to enjoy it, which feels tricky at the time, but I really tried to remember that through the incredible anxiety and fake tan-stained tears,” she said.

Speaking about her biggest competition, Ellie confessed: “Everyone doing the show begins from a different starting point, so I knew that there was no point looking at it that competitively. I had no dance experience and zero control over my limbs – I was just hoping I could make it down all the stairs. As long as I knew I went out and tried my hardest each week then I knew there was nothing more I could ask of myself.”

The 41-year-old also spoke about her biggest challenge whilst on Strictly, adding: “It was all challenging, to be honest, but all the best things in life are. I’m so glad I did the show. I look back on it incredibly fondly.”

She had previously said after her Strictly stint that she found her experience “very humbling.” Speaking to , she said: “The terror of being about to go live to millions of people doing something you cannot do is very humbling.

“What I’ll always take from it is that I tried my absolute hardest, and that’s the message you want to pass on to your kids, isn’t it?”

Regarding her views on the latest controversy surrounding ‘s rehearsal scandal, Ellie replied: “All I can speak about is my own experience doing Strictly, and I really loved the whole thing.”

The recent Strictly Live! tour was shrouded in controversy after opera singer stepped down after it emerged that he had made a comment that was deemed sexually inappropriate during a photo call.

It was later revealed that Wynne had used the sexually suggestive term “spit roast” to describe host Janette Manrara during a private joke with ” actor and former co-star .

He later apologised, saying, “My language was inappropriate and unacceptable, for which I sincerely apologise.”

Ellie has recently teamed up with The National Lottery with its 2025 Open Week campaign, which is encouraging the nation to say ‘yes’ to new experiences. Research statistics show that nine in ten (92%) UK adults admit to having cancelled social plans.

What’s more, over a fifth of UK adults (22%) make plans knowing they’ll cancel them nearer the time – prioritising chores, work overtime or run out of energy.

Speaking about the campaign, Ellie said: ” I think Open Week is a great opportunity to make a plans to see and do something brand new! As a mother to a young baby who’s done nothing social for about 18 months, I’m committed to saying yes this year!”
