Motorists told to mind their travel speed or face fines as more cities roll out AI cameras

Motorists have been urged to watch how fast they are travelling when taking to the roads as the 14% in three years. According to figures sourced by , 3.3 million fines were issued across the UK during 2024 – an increase of around 400,000 in 12 months.

Rhydian Jones, expert at Confused.com, noted that the increase in drivers being caught is partially due to the roll-out of AI-powered cameras, which are used to . He explained: “Our latest research found that over nine million drivers have been in the last three years. That, as the number of speeding fines in 2024, is 14% higher than those caught in 2022. But isn’t the only issue, as cause dangerous driving too.

“That’s why the piloting of AI speed cameras is a step in the right direction to improve road safety. The technology can spot drivers and passengers not wearing a seatbelt or using their phone behind the wheel. The hope is that this will really help to crack down on drivers who risk the safety of themselves and other road users when behind the wheel.”

AI-powered roadside cameras are already being used by a wide range of police constabularies, including the Metropolitan Police, North Wales, and Humberside, with Avon & Somerset and Devon & Cornwall preparing to introduce them in the near future.

Compared to conventional speed cameras, the AI-powered cameras can spot drivers breaking a much broader set of rules, such as using their phone whilst on the move or not wearing their seatbelt.

Drivers in Durham saw the most penalties for traffic crimes caught by AI cameras, with the devices catching a staggering 951 motoring offences during 2024 – around 70 more than the Metropolitan Police’s network of cameras.

No matter whether a driver is caught by a camera or officer, the penalties for speeding can be hefty, with fines spanning from £100 to £2,500, depending on the severity and location of the offence.

He added: “If you’re fined for speeding, the minimum cost is £100 and three points on your licence. But in some cases, the amount can depend on your annual income, which band your fine falls into and how much faster than the limit you were driving.

“Using our speeding fine calculator will help you to work out how much you might owe if you are caught.”
