It can be a constant battle trying to keep the glass of your shower clean and streak free. Often, even when you have cleaned it, there can still be residual marks that show up instantly, leaving you feeling defeated.

Water spots, soap scum, and limescale can all contribute to the marks on the glass and according to glass experts at, the problem isn’t how often you clean – it’s how you clean. They say most people unknowingly use the wrong cleaning products or techniques, which actually leave residue behind, making streaks worse over time. However, there’s one simple trick that professionals swear by – and it’s hiding in your kitchen cupboard.

Shower glass constantly comes into contact with hard water, soap, and humidity, all of which leave behind mineral deposits, limescale, and grime.

If not cleaned correctly, these deposits dry onto the glass, causing the dull, streaky appearance many people struggle to remove.

Glass Balustrades UK experts warn against harsh chemical cleaners, which can strip the protective coating on glass and make streaks even more noticeable. Instead, they recommend a natural, streak-free solution – olive oil.

It may sound surprising, but olive oil is one of the most effective ways to achieve a streak-free shine on shower glass.

Unlike traditional glass cleaners, olive oil breaks down stubborn residue, repels water, and creates a protective barrier that prevents streaks from forming.

Here’s how to use olive oil for streak-free shower glass:

Step 1: Clean the glass first

Before applying olive oil, you need to remove existing soap scum and grime. Use a natural cleaner such as, equal parts white vinegar and warm water, which is great for breaking down limescale, and a few drops of dish soap in warm water – to lift dirt and grease.

Spray the solution onto the glass, let it sit for five to 10 minutes, then wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth.

Step 2: Apply a small amount of olive oil

Dampen a soft cloth or cotton pad with a few drops of olive oil. Gently rub it over the entire surface of the glass, using circular motions to evenly distribute the oil.

Step 3: Buff the glass to a streak-free shine

After applying the oil, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to buff the glass and remove any excess. This will leave a clear, streak-free finish while creating a protective barrier that prevents water spots and grime from sticking.

Bonus Tip: If you’re worried about excess oil, mix a small amount of lemon juice with the olive oil before applying. The acidity in lemon helps break down any buildup while enhancing shine.

Unlike chemical cleaners, olive oil naturally repels water, meaning it prevents future streaks and water spots from forming.

It also has gentle cleansing properties, making it safe to use on shower glass without damaging the surface.

According to Glass Balustrades UK, this method is especially useful for homes with hard water, where mineral deposits make streaks even harder to remove.

They added: “Most streaks happen because traditional cleaning methods don’t actually remove all the residue – they just spread it around.

“Olive oil not only cuts through grime but also protects the glass, keeping it streak-free for longer. A simple trick like this can make all the difference in keeping your shower looking pristine.”

To keep on top of your cleaning the experts also said  to squeegee after every shower as this prevents water spots from forming.

And to keep ventilation high as humidity leads to streaks and soap buildup.
