Neglecting our eyesight is one thing many people are guilty of. And is more than just determining if you need a prescription or not as experts are alerting people of certain foods that can have a major impact in eyesight, including one common food that plenty of people eat every day.
An analysis carried out by Overnight Glasses found that can lead to an increasing risk of eye-related issues. Sodium-rich foods can damage retinal blood vessels through heightened blood pressure. Of the foods the experts note, one may be shocking for many as it was found that white bread could have a negative impact on eye health.

The experts explained that diets which are “high in refined carbohydrates” have been linked to an increased risk of a condition known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can cause blurry or lost vision over time. Additionally, white bread has a glycemic index of 70 and studies have shown a correlation between high-glycemic-index foods and AMD risk.
However, is a staple in many homes and is something that is hard to curb. Fortunately, you do not have to cut it out completely, but reduce or limit the consumption of refined carbs such as white bread, instead opting for whole-grain options can help reduce the risk.
Gidon Sadovsy, founder of Overnight Glasses, reassured that “consuming these foods occasionally and in moderate amounts is unlikely to cause immediate harm” but highlighted the importance of making small changes.

He said: “However, frequent consumption, especially in large portions, may contribute to vision problems over time. A balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, is crucial for maintaining overall health, including eye health.”
Other foods that could impact eyesight and were noted in the analysis included french fries, which are associated with a greater risk of developing a severe form of age-related macular degeneration, known as choroidal neovascularisation, processed cheese slices, bacon and even rice cakes.
Rice cakes have a high glycemic index, which is “even higher than sugar,” resulting in “rapid spikes” in blood sugar. Over time, the spikes can cause damage to rental blood vessels and potentially increase the risk of diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, especially in those who are diabetic or pre-diabetic
