A huge star has been axed from his role after four years. Dr Alex George, who originally shot to fame on reality show before appearing on everything from and to , has been told by the government that his role as UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador has been cut as part of a shake-up which will see England axed.

Prime minister announced in Parliament yesterday (March 13) that in an attempt to limit bureaucracy within the national health service, the NHS England name will be no more – with around 9,500 jobs cut. That appears to include Dr Alex’s, as he penned a heartfelt statement on social media.

Taking to , the star wrote: “The Government has informed me of their decision to end the role of UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador. A role that I have been volunteering in for the last four years.

“This is and will always be the greatest honour of my life, to have served you all. It has meant more to me than words will ever convey. This role gave me purpose and a reason to continue after my brother, Llŷr, died by suicide. Through the tragic loss of one life, we have saved the lives of many others.

“I never in my wildest imagination thought that posting a picture of me with a sign, would lead to sitting with the Prime Minister in 10 Downing Street. I guess you have to go for stuff, and follow your heart.”

The reality star was appointed to the role in February 2021, helping to secure £79million in additional funding for school mental health support teams. Dr Alex also helped to develop Early Support Hubs, which help with mental health intervention for young people in their local communities – securing nearly £8million in funding for the 24 hubs across the country.

After touring UK schools to advocate for mental health support, Dr Alex admitted: “While my time as ambassador has now come to an end, my passion for this work has never been stronger. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, but there is still SO much more to do.”

He thanked fans for their support over the years, adding: “A chapter closes, but the mission continues. Let’s make mental fitness for everyone. Over and out (for now).”

Fans rushed to offer Alex their support, with one gushing “The government cannot end your role as UK youth mental health ambassador Alex because you ARE the UK youth mental health ambassador whether or not that title is officially assigned to you or not. It makes no difference.

“Nothing will change in the eyes of those who support you and rely on you and take strength from you, the official title is irrelevant. You are doing more for mental health in this country than anyone has in decades and long will you continue to do so I’m sure of that. Thank you to you and Llŷr for making such a change.”

Another added: “A rare and true inspiration to so many. I am in awe of your accomplishments, and your unwavering compassion. Never not be you and all you bring to this world. I’m feeling quite emotional reading this in the best way possible.”
