Social Media Explodes Over Donald Trump’s ‘More Soldiers’ On Greenland Talk

President Donald Trump caused yet more controversy Thursday by once again talking up the idea of America seizing control of the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland.

“We have to do it. We really need it for national security. I think that’s why NATO might have to get involved, in a way, as we really need Greenland for national security,” Trump told reporters during an Oval Office briefing alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Trump on Greenland: “Denmark is very far away. A boat landed there 200 years ago or something and they say they have rights to it. I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t think it is, actually … we really need it for national security … maybe you’ll see more and more soldiers go there.”

Trump noted how U.S. soldiers are already stationed at bases on the island and teased, “Maybe you’ll see more and more soldiers go there?”

“I don’t know,” he continued, before turning to former Fox News personality-turned-Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to ask: “What do you think about that Pete? Don’t answer that Pete, don’t answer that.”

Critics used social media to utterly slam Trump’s rhetoric.

We do not appreciate the Secr. Gen. of NATO joking with Trump about Greenland like this. It would mean war between two NATO countries. Greenland has just voted against immediate independence from Denmark and does not want to be American ever.pic.twitter.com/eh7enEHoA8

Using the “we need it for security line” grandfathered down from Putin’s attack on Ukraine. Security from … Iceland? Environmentally displaced polar bears?

Trump is now threatening pull a Crimea on Greenland. He may do a joint invasion with Vlad Putin.

Well, sounds like that’s a direct threat to a NATO ally. I swear to christ, NATO, I ain’t able bodied, but if you need something, hit me up. I’m down to fight tyranny and imperialism in a support capacity.
