Despite the northern hemisphere entering spring in just a few days’ time, the UK is bracing for a return to the icy, subzero pits of winter. Weather forecasts show a drop to -2C and a band of moving across the country in late March, stretching around 500 miles from the Scottish Highlands to southeast Wales.

A snowy front isn’t likely to hit seven major UK cities, including Leeds, Manchester and Cardiff, until the end of the month. However, after setting in at around 12pm on Wednesday, March 26, primarily impacting northwest Scottish and English coasts.

It will then continue throughout the day, intersecting with a blitz of rain, set to fall at around 1mm per hour across a stretch of England between the Yorkshire coast and Plymouth.

By 6am on March 27, snow is expected to spread across Scotland, accumulating to depths of around 3cm, with patchy areas stretching all the way down to Cardiff, and covering six other UK cities in its wake.

Today:

Initial frost chased out by intermittent sunshine and showers across central, eastern and far northern regions. Wintry rainfall expected in high areas, with western areas staying largely dry.

Tonight:

More rainfall moving southwards overnight, with an increased risk of snow and sleet on high ground. Patchy fog expected in the south and west.

Friday:

Showers clearing early in the south, ushering in another sunny day, broken up by occasional wintry conditions in the north. Chilly temperatures across the board.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Dry and sunny on Saturday, with temperatures around 10C. Cloudier on Sunday, with overnight frost and some rainfall moving into next week.
