Zakopane in Poland has been described as the budget-conscious alternative to Switzerland and is a resort town found south of the country.
Located in the Podhale region at the foot of the Tatra Mountain, Zokopane holds many similarities to Switzerland thanks to the town’s rustic charm, array of winter sports available and its picturesque landscapes.
Travel expert and blogger at Girl with the Passport, Kelly Duhigg spoke of Zakopane’s beauty that’s “without the inflated prices”.
She explained: “Though just a few hours south of Krakow by bus, Zakopane retains the rustic charm of Switzerland.

She explained the town offers quaint “wooden chalets, sporting elaborate carved eaves dot steep and cobbled streets between towering peaks.”
Zakopane is a popular tourist destination particularly among adrenaline junkies thanks to its outdoor activities on offer such as skiing, hiking and mountaineering earning its title of being “the winter capital of Poland”.
The population in this magical town sits at only 27,266 back in 2017, meaning the region is far less crowded than many other tourist spots in Europe.
Duhigg added: “It’s a hiker’s paradise crisscrossed with uber picturesque trails. But what makes Zakopane truly sing are its people – a proud folk steeped in tradition.
“Outside any local pub on a summer night, you’ll find villagers singing old shepherd songs to the strum of guitars as children run free. No one locks their door here. It’s easy to feel part of the community.”
