viewers were left fuming after a caller to Kevin O’Sullivan’s show revealed how much one local council had spent on driving lessons for asylum seekers. The caller had requested the figure from Kent County Council under the freedom of information act and told Kevin they had confirmed they spent £20,143.86 on lessons for “refugees who have been granted asylum status”. Kevin was shocked by the figure as were the viewers who took to X to vent about it.
“Kent Council’s £20K for asylum seekers’ driving lessons is outrageous! Locals struggle while taxpayer money funds perks for newcomers. Prioritise citizens, not this wasteful spending. Madness must stop! #KentCouncilFail,” one raged. “We now live in a county where, immigrants, be they legal or illegal, are given ‘primacy’ before our natural citizens. We are going to have to pick up the tab for this insanity and at some point in the not to distant future we’re going to have to clear this mess up ourselves. The government has completely lost control,” another opined.

A third chimed in: “Absolutely insane. There is no end to this madness.”
“My youngest son went and got a job at 17 years old as soon as was over and paying taxes just so this government throws it away on asylum seekers for driving lessons etc. This is precisely the reason these illegal migrants are breaking their necks to get to the UK,” a fourth fumed.
“It’s cost me thousands to get my son driving lessons £60 for an hour we been doing that for 2 years as he couldn’t get a driving test for a year I’m absolutely fuming at this,” a fifth stated.
“Why should they get it for free when it cost my sons £600 each for lessons and test? All we are doing is encouraging more to come, and I never voted for that,” a sixth stated.

The caller told Kevin: “I basically put in a Freedom of Information request with Kent County Council. It has been going back and forth now for weeks, but finally, just just this evening, they are not got it back.
“The question that I asked was, how much has Kent County Council spent on driving lessons and driving tests for those seeking asylum in Kent between the first of January 2024 to January 2025 – the last year. I believe that we shouldn’t be paying for that.”
Kevin agreed with him as he continued. “It’s the fiscal year 24 to 25. The expenditure was £20,143.86.”
Asked abut the status of those qualifying for these free lessons the man said the council confirmed: “Only refugees who have been granted asylum status are eligible for the funding of driving lessons.”
