A used car expert has taken to , urging drivers looking to get behind the wheel of a to see whether it has a certain engine fitted.

Grant runs the YouTube channel , creating videos in which he gives viewers a wide range of tips that can help them find the perfect vehicle for their needs.

In , Grant recommends that drivers looking for a choose a fitted with the 2.0-litre VTEC engine, stating there were lots of models to choose from.

He explained: “Those of you who watch this channel or know me will probably know that I am a massive fan of these engines, and it’s for a good reason. These were produced from 2001 up until around 2011 or 2012, and they found their way into most of the Hondas of that era you can care to mention.

“It was just a brilliantly-engineered 2.0-litre engine, and there were so many variants as well. You got the high-powered versions, in the likes of the Civic Type-R. I actually like this engine so much I actually installed one into a to create the ultimate OAP weapon, but that’s a story for another time!”

Whilst the Honda VTEC was first introduced in the 1980s, the ‘intelligent’ i-VTEC series launched in 2001 – being fitted to popular models like the Civic, Accord, and FR-V.

The long-running engine was notable for featuring electronically-controlled variable valve timing, which results in better fuel economy at low speeds and more power when the engine is revved.

As a result, the powerful 2.0-litre variant found a lot of success when it was fitted to the Honda Civic Type-R, accelerating from 0-62mph in around 6.5 seconds and featuring a top speed of 146mph.

Later in the video, Grant suggested that the less powerful variants of the i-VTEC, which were used in the standard versions of the Civic, Accord, and CRV, are also particularly fuel-efficient and reliable.

He added: “The lower-output versions found their way into Civics, CRVs, Accords, right up until about 2007. Honda obviously knew that they had a good engine here and they were making use of it.

“Whilst they are getting a little bit older now, they still remain a fantastic used budget purchase.”

Nevertheless, Grant suggested that drivers considering an i-VTEC-powered Honda make sure the rest of the car is in good condition, checking the sills and wheel arches for any signs of rust.

He advised: “Whilst these engines will run forever and a day, believe me, you’re going to want to be careful around the rest of the car.

“Given that they’re getting a little bit older now, especially for somewhere like here in the UK with all the salt on the roads, rust is becoming a bit of an issue.”
