While healthy soil is a necessity for an abundance of plant growth in the garden, when it comes to hydrangeas specifically, there’s one crucial task you must also do.

Pruning hydrangeas “promotes fresh growth, resulting in more vibrant blooms when summer rolls around”.

Other shrubs that would need pruning right now include:

  • Wisteria
  • Roses
  • Hydrangeas
  • Clematis
  • Fruit trees.

When it comes to pruning hydrangeas, or any of the above shrubs, it’s important to cut back last year’s growth by around two-thirds.

Pruning correctly involves removing any damaged, weak, or diseased plant branches.

March is also a key month for sowing crops and flowers to create a continuous bloom throughout the summer.

While the conditions outside may be too harsh for young seedlings, flowers can start to be grown indoors.

LeAnne said: “Starting early means your flowers and vegetables will be ready to plant outdoors as soon as the weather warms up, rather than waiting to sow them when the temperatures are already up.”

The perfect environmental conditions to sow seeds include inside of a summerhouse or heated space.

Wherever you decide to sow seeds, make sure the place is warm enough to encourage growth.

Experts at Sutton Seeds have revealed a list of flowering plants you can now sow in March, which are:

  • Marigolds
  • Sweet peas
  • Delphiniums
  • Sunflowers.

“Early spring is the time to propagate a plethora of seeds ready for summer flowering,” the experts noted.
