Gardening expert says you can grow ‘loads’ of tomatoes with simple trick

An expert gardener has shared how he ditches to grow his own at home. Tomatoes are a staple of many dishes, especially pasta and even . Despite this, not many people know exactly how to grow them in their own homes, even though it is rather easy and straight-forward, only involving a few steps.

Gardening expert and author of Grow Your Own Groceries, Simon Akeroyd, has shared the simple way he actually uses store-bought tomatoes to grow even more, eventually leaving him with an abundance of tomatoes after one small supermarket purchase. Tomatoes are full of seeds, he explains, which he uses to begin growing his own. In a viral post on , he shared how this time of the year is the best for sewing tomato seeds, urging gardeners to do so for the best results.

To begin, he simply cuts a tomato into slices and grabs a plastic supermarket fruit container with holes in the bottom. Then, he places two slices over a layer of compost.

Cover that with more compost and place it on a sunny windowsill. In “just a few day”, you should have “loads of baby tomato plants”, Akeroyd says.

There are a few things that people should keep an eye out for when . The gardener advises to “prick out the seedlings when they produce true leaves” and when doing so, hold them by the leaf and not the stem when you are transferring them to larger, individual pots.
