The are reportedly set to axe the much-loved Sportsday show as part of a major revamp to its sports coverage. It’s claimed several jobs will be cut as the organisation look to shift to a more digital-focused approach.
It’s reported by that the will be offering ‘accelerated voluntary redundancies’ to select employees in their sports department as part of the shake-up. What’s more, the outlet has also revealed that the long-running show Sportsday will be cut from its channels.
In total, 27 roles are set to be cut, with the broadcaster and news outlet aiming to create a further 27 jobs. It comes as the ’s sports department aims to “put more emphasis on reactive stories via streaming and original journalism rather than traditional TV coverage.”
A source told The Mail: “It feels like they are killing sports news on television. Those involved are distraught. It came as a shock and it’s fair to say that none of them saw it coming. They’re basically decimating the output of sports news on television.”

A Sport spokeswoman added: “The proposed changes would allow us to enhance our storytelling and live event coverage to ensure we remain relevant and deliver more value for audiences across the UK.”
It comes ahead of a major Match of the Day shake-up, with set to depart his role as presenter after over two decades in the hot seat. His contract with the broadcaster had been due to expire at the end of the season and while he won’t feature on Match of the Day broadcasts for the 2025/26 campaign, Lineker has been given an extension that will see him work on the ’s 2026 World Cup coverage.
Speaking at the time during an episode of the Rest Is Football podcast: “I feel this is now the right time [to leave]. I think the next contract they’re looking to do Match of the Day slightly differently, so I think it makes sense for someone else to take the helm.”

Lineker is set to be replaced by committee, with Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan expected to share the role as main host in the new season. Reacting to the appointment, Cates said: “Once I sit in that chair and the theme music starts, I just know that’s going to be a really incredible moment.
“I’ve worked with a lot of the pundits before and they’re all fantastic, so I’m just looking forward to getting started. I’ve known Gabby and Mark really well for years so to bring it all together, embracing the digital side of things, it feels like a really comprehensive football package for fans and that’s what makes it so exciting too.”
