Bananas can be notoriously tricky to keep ripe in your , often being stubbornly green before rapidly turning brown and becoming overripe. The dilemma with bananas is that their stems emit ethylene gas, a plant hormone that hastens ripening and enhances flavour but leads to a limited shelf life. Most release some ethylene gas, but excess levels accelerate ripening and subsequent decay for nearby produce, making appropriate critical.

Recognising their sensitivity to ethylene, a life hack enthusiast recommends isolating bananas from other fruits and covering them with one simple item to prolong their freshness. Taking to their YouTube account, , one man shared .

He captioned the clip: “In this video, I show you how to keep bananas fresh for a longer period of time.

“This simple life hack will allow you to get a few extra days of freshness from your bunch of bananas!”

He explained that all you have to do is tightly wrap plastic wrap around the banana stems.

Then, when you want to take one, use a knife to cut one of the bananas, making sure not to move the cling film.

As mentioned earlier, bananas, like many fruits, naturally release ethylene gas that controls browning and ripening. Much of the gases escape from the stems or the crowns, so by wrapping the crowns, you can slow down the ripening process a bit.
