The captain of the cargo ship involved in the crash in the North Sea, the Solong, is a Russian national, the vessel’s owners has said.
The rest of the crew were Russian and Filipino nationals, shipping company Ernst Russ said.
The captain of the Portuguese vessel Solong was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter after the ship crashed into the US tanker Stena Immaculate on Monday.
The 59-year-old remains in custody, police said in a statement on Wednesday morning.
Humberside Police said: “Detectives are continuing to conduct extensive lines of inquiry alongside partners in connection with the collision between a tanker and cargo vessel in the North Sea, off the coast of Grimsby, north-east Lincolnshire.
“A 59-year-old man remains in our custody, having been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision.”
