Netflix now streaming ‘brutal and beautiful’ show from the creator of Yellowstone

Netflix has just added another must-watch Western drama from TV mastermind Taylor Sheridan, the producer behind Paramount’s smash-hit Yellowstone.

The flagship Western series has concluded in the US and follows ranch owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) as he fights to protect his land.

Three seasons of Sheridan’s popular US drama was recently added to the streaming service in the UK and now subscribers have the chance to catch the showrunner’s powerful prequel in the same universe.

1883 has just been added to the platform today (Wednesday, 12th March) and it’s a must-watch for any Western fan.

Set after the Civil War, the series follows Dutton’s ancestors James and Margaret Dutton, portrayed by country music legends Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, as they embark on a perilous journey through the American West.

Former Union Army soldier and Pinkerton Agent Shea Brennan (played by Sam Elliott) guides them on their dangerous quest to Oregon before they eventually settle what becomes the Yellowstone ranch in Montana.

The prequel series is widely regarded one of the best entries in the Yellowstone saga, and is definitely not one to miss if you’ve already streamed the first three seasons of the original drama.

1883 has received rave reviews from viewers, including from those who have never even seen its predecessor before.

One such fan raved in their Google write-up: “A gold nugget! Brutal but beautiful, punchy but poignant. I went into this with no prior knowledge of Yellowstone or that this is a prequel, so I’m reviewing this as a standalone.

“I was utterly blown away by it. It’s for me one of those rare cinematic experiences where everything came together to make a deep, beautiful piece of thought provoking art.”

Someone else agreed: “Absorbing and gripping, this short series can stand alone or be coupled w 1923 and Yellowstone.”

However, they also warned: “Nothing is sugar-coated here. From eating a buffalo heart to amputating a leg, the visuals are realistic verging on overdone. Not for the squeamish.”

And another five-star review gushed: “A++++ Even as a stand-alone, without any Yellowstone knowledge, it’s an incredible ride.

“Sam Elliott is, as always, phenomenal. Tim McGraw is a revelation. As seemingly as “out of nowhere” is the brilliance of Cole Hauser’s Rip performance on Yellowstone, so is McGraw’s.

“Genuinely arresting, believable, heartbreaking and real. Faith Hill does more than hold her own and can bring you to tears. Both are extremely believable and relatable to any parents out there.”

And a final fan said: “If you love grand, epic stories, let yourself be swept away by 1883.

“A raw and powerful western that follows the Oregon Trail, where there is no good or evil — only strength and weakness against the vast, unforgiving wilderness.

“The landscapes are breathtaking, the direction is masterful, and the lead actress, Isabel May, lights up every scene with rare intensity.”
