Inside Elton John’s beautiful mansion home three miles from Royal Family castle

’s mansion Woodside, located in Old Windsor, is a mere three miles from the Royal Family abode at – around a 10 minute drive. Sitting on 37 acres of gardens on the edge of Windsor Great Park, the Your Song hitmaker, 77, has really hit on a gem with his rural property, which was originally built in the 16th century.

The large detached home was built in the 1500s for Henry VIII’s surgeon, specifically placed within sight of Windsor Castle so that if an emergency flag was hoisted up, the doctor would be able to see it and could be summoned to the King’s aid.

Of course, Elton’s current home has been rebuilt several times after being destroyed by fire an incredible three times over. It was most recently reconstructed in 1947 in a “post war mock Georgian” style. Refurbished in 1989, the home contains eight bedrooms, five reception rooms, a billiard room and even a squash court.

Nicknamed ‘the hub’ by Elton, the property – purchased in 1974 for £400,000, the equivalent of £5.2million today – is just one of the many houses owned by the pop superstar. He also has two neighbouring mansions in Beverly Hills and various holiday homes situated throughout Europe. But his Woodside mansion – close to where the star’s nan used to live – is his pride and joy.

He used to share the home with his grandmother, who lived in a separate apartment in the orangery. Now he lives there with his husband David Furnish and their children Elijah and Zachary.

The star told Architectural Digest: “When I came out of rehab ten years ago, I realised that life is so much more beautiful than my house reflected. I wanted a normal life, a traditional country house….

“Ever since then, I’ve always had a decorating project underway, and because I always want to do more, each house is a work in progress. If I weren’t a musician, I would love to be a decorator.”

The stunning property even boasts a library, with flooring of plaited Norfolk rush that has to be “sprinkled with water twice a month to keep it from drying out”. His dining room contains a huge oak table and a selection of Elton’s awards, while the garden boasts a stable for donkeys and ponies along with a life-size Tyrannosaurus Rex sculpture, known fondly as Daisy.

Water features and topiary complete the stunning outdoor elements, while statues and a pergola are also positioned outside to provide more landscaping.

Elton even has a private chapel as part of his Windsor home, which acts as a space for the star to honour the late Princess Diana – his close friend.

When Elton purchased the house, he brought in his extensive collections of jukeboxes, pinball machines, and even a replica of Tutankhamen’s state throne. Elton’s tour costumes were also stored at the house – but his extensive wares were auctioned off for an incredible £6.3million in 1988. That’s more than £17.7million in 2025.
