A confidant of and Betsy Arakawa has revealed insights into the couple’s deeply private marriage, following their in February. The pair, who cherished their privacy, spent their twilight years in Santa Fe before their sorrowful demise.
At a press briefing on Friday (March 7), authorities disclosed that Hackman, who showed signs of advanced , might not have realised his wife had died, raising poignant questions about his final days. Gene depended heavily on Betsy for care, as medical professionals noted, and without her, his survival was doubtful.
Tom Allin, a long-standing friend, spoke to the New York Times, painting a picture of a harmonious relationship with Betsy at the helm of Gene’s healthcare. He remarked that Hackman appeared content with his wife’s leadership, as she meticulously managed his wellbeing.

“She was very protective of him,” Tom said, suggesting that Betsy’s devotion extended Gene’s life. “She just really looked after him,” he continued, disclosing how Betsy even mixed soda water with wine to safeguard his health during his 90th birthday.
Daniel Lenihan, a close friend of the couple, fondly recalled their last encounter: “Last time we saw them, they were alive and well. They were so delightful to be around. Probably never seen a couple that got along and enjoyed each other so much.”

He also highlighted how Betsy was always ensuring Gene’s health was a priority, with regular yoga and light exercises. Daniel commended her efforts, stating: “Betsy was a wonderful wife. They were very close, and she was a good cook and really, really took good care of him. They ate very well. He had had a triple bypass, maybe around 60 [years old], and he’d been in really good health since then, and I’m sure she was one of those factors.”
