can finally heave a huge sigh of relief at the pumps as petrol prices have fallen for the first time in six months. With spiralling living costs and slashing the , Brits nationwide are looking for ways to save money.

After climbing more than 6p a litre, petrol hit a high of 139.8p a litre last month. However, many relieved Brits will be pleased to hear that petrol prices dropped to 139.3p a litre on Monday.

The average cost of filling up a family car, such as a 55 litre Ford Focus, will now be £76.61, according to RAC foundation. The RAC updates its figures on where the cheapest petrol can be found on an almost daily basis.

However, drivers are still being hammered at the pump as experts think the drop should be bigger because of a strong pound and a slump in oil prices.

The average price of a litre of diesel increased by 0.73p last month to 146.48p, the highest price seen since late August 2024.

The AA’s pump prices spokesman, Luke Bosdet, said: “Wholesale petrol costs have been tumbling since mid-January, and only now has the 8p decrease started to show in the UK’s average price.

“While increased staffing and electricity costs will have impacted on fuel retailer overheads, the AA still believes a substantial cut in pump prices is due.

“The cosy relationship between retailers locally, where those that could cut their prices wait for a rival to make the first move, is one of the reasons why average pump prices have been in a holding pattern for so long.

“The fact that that has happened in the winter when road vehicles consume more fuel has added to driver woes.”

The price of petrol sky-rocketed following ‘s full-scale invasion of . A litre of petrol cost a staggering 191.43p in July 2022 – a few months following the Russian incursion.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that petrol and diesel owners have travelled up to 30 miles to fill up at one of the UK’s cheapest fuel stations. A Shell garage in Braintree, Essex, offers bargain prices, with motorists paying just 129.9p per litre to top up.
