is reportedly making a huge change to car at five of its popular stores in a bid to deal with its substantial debt burden. The popular UK supermarket revealed that it might be forced to remove the parking space across the crucial stores to raise around £5million, reports .

According to the report, it is considering offloading around 10 acres of car parking space and nearby fields across stores in Slough, Reading, Burgh Heath near Epsom, and Tilbury in Essex and Cardiff. The shocking move is a part of the company’s broader view to revitalise the struggling store under executive chairman Allan Leighton, who took over last November. According to property sources, the deal may help the giant supermarket pay off its £ 6 billion debt.

Newsteer, which is coordinating with Asda over the sale, shared to potential developers about the “surplus space” that could be converted into new homes or shops adjacent to existing Asda supermarkets. However, the move is likely to affect drivers who would struggle to find parking at their local stores.

The sale would decrease the number of car parking spaces at the affected stores, but Asda has outlined the minimum parking capacity it must retain.

A spokesman for Asda said: “It’s common practice for national retailers with large property portfolios like Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s to explore how best to make use of surplus land in their property estate.

“Prospective parties interested in these sites are advised to contact Newsteer.”
