are reportedly closing in on a statement signing this summer, but it won’t be the statement fans had in mind. Amid injuries to , Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and , their lack of firepower was .

That result left ’s side 15 points behind leaders , with their title hopes now all but over. Both the manager and owners have come in for severe criticism for not adding a striker to the ranks last summer, despite being linked to a host of high-profile targets. Instead, came in on loan as an extra option out wide, and midfielder Mikel Merino was also signed, while defender Ricardo Calafiori was brought in from Bologna.

Ironically, Arteta is currently using Merino as an emergency striker, while Sterling is almost certain to be sent back to Stamford Bridge after a disappointing campaign. However, the Gunners now appear at risk of repeating the critical mistake that has arguably cost them dear in the 2024/25 season.

According to Spanish outlet , Athletic Club winger Nico Williams is set to move to the Emirates this summer. The 22-year-old has been one of Europe’s most sought-after talents since , where he scored the opener in Spain’s 2-1 final win over England.

He is said to have rejected the notion of staying in La Liga and joining Barcelona, with Hansi Flick unable to guarantee him a regular place in the team amid the form of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. Instead, he has reportedly agreed in principle to join , despite further interest from , Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.

Williams undoubtedly represents an upgrade on Sterling, but while he will bring additional quality to north London, he lacks in the one department that fans crave to be addressed. His goal return at Athletic is a modest one, scoring just 27 times in 157 appearances.

He will also be adding to a department where Arteta is already well stocked. By the time the Spaniard arrives, the club should have Saka and Martinelli back fit, while the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri has been a bright spot in ’s stumbling season.

Cynics will suggest that chasing his signature signifies the fact that Arteta has not learnt from past mistakes. Williams will add creativity, pace, and flair to the ranks, but does not guarantee the one thing need more than anything – goals.
