Jennie continued: “She has other charities and causes, and all credit to her. You don’t look at Camilla who has never had a career and who was always linked in with the horsey, aristocratic crowd and think ‘Oh, there walks a feminist’.

“But she absolutely is a feminist. She has stood up, first of all quite quietly, but now very noisily for women’s rights and equality.”

Arriving at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday in her role as President, the Queen quickly made her excitement clear as she greeted several famous faces, including Victoria Beckham, actresses Dame Harriet Walter, Sarah Lancashire and Ruth Jones, and TV chef Andi Oliver.

After introductions, the Queen, who looked suitably regal in a dark blue dress, gave a speech as she highlighted the incredible work of others and why it is a subject matter which is so close to her heart.

Referring to her annual reception with WOW, the Queen told the audience: “It has been a very special fixture in my diary to host all of you each March, on or around International Women’s Day… Without fail, wherever WOW gathers, I have met the most extraordinary and impressive women who have, quite simply, refused to take ‘no’ for an answer.

“Some of them have a significant public profile. Others can’t be named because the work that they do would put their lives, or the lives of those whom they support, in danger. All of them have faced obstacles that could easily have intimidated them into a silent resignation to the status quo.”

She spoke candidly about what inspired her to choose such a difficult subject, explaining: “By scratching the surface, you get a terrible shock. It’s a heinous crime. If we could just get more people discussing it, talking about it, people are so shocked by what they hear that, rather like me, they want to say ‘oh, hang on a minute’ perhaps there’s something we can do to put an end to it.”
