A Shell garage in Braintree, Essex is offering bargain prices, with motorists paying just 129.9p per litre to top up.

Marion Buffet, 63, admitted driving from Leigh-on-Sea to Braintree to fill up her petrol vehicle at the station. 

The journey is a whopping 30 miles away and can take almost an hour to reach the fuel pump.

However, it’s not just the cheap costs which are a major selling point for the garage with customers also praising the staff’s excellent customer service.

Marion told : “​​It’s fantastic here. The staff are great. I come all the way up from Leigh-on-sea. 

“This is the cheapest place. The staff are the best, they have people at the pumps and directing you off of the road. 

“They’re so pleasant, they’re really lovely. It’s almost a pleasure to come in and buy petrol.”

Franchise owner Senthill Selvan, 58, said he doesn’t advertise his petrol station’s budget costs.

The owner stressed the petrol station tends to make a small profit from sales of petrol and diesel but keeps costs low to help locals in the area. Before December, petrol at the Braintree petrol station was listed as low as 125.9p per litre. 

Mr Selvan said: “It’s for our loyal customers and to support our community.”

It comes as warn drivers have faced five months of consecutive fuel rises, with costs up in February. 

Unleaded fuel was up by 0.65p last month with fees reaching 139.65p per litre. 

This was the highest national petrol price average since September 2024 when average costs were at 139.81p per litre. 

Meanwhile, average diesel prices were also up, with fees increasing from 0.73p to 146.48p per litre. This was the highest diesel has been listed at fuel stations since the end of August 2024. 

fuel spokesperson Simon Williams suggested that fees could soon come down in a boost for road users.

He said: “But we hope better times are on the horizon. With wholesale fuel costs falling throughout February, there’s a good prospect petrol and diesel prices will come down this month as retailers buy fresh stock at lower prices.”
