Falmouth was named the ‘most depressing’ UK town (Image: Getty)
The town of Falmouth was crowned the ‘most depressing’ in the UK in a new TikTok video. The town, on the south coast of Cornwall, was named on a list compiled by the flagsnfact account, alongside Peterborough, Crawley, Croydon and 16 others.
Falmouth, despite its incredible sea views and vibrant high street, was also named “depressing” by website iLiveHere in 2024 which seems to be the source of the new TikTok video. The satirical website stated at the time that the council estates of Acacia Road and Old Hill were the worst places in Falmouth and said about the findings: “We have to admit, we know absolutely nothing about Falmouth. “We Googled it and it looks picturesque – but we’re sure it’s a facade it trades on, and who are we to question the wisdom of the crowd?
“Hell we might even take a trip to this Cornish port and stay in an Airbnb that is now owned by a London landlord that a local family once lived in, to take in what we imagine is a sterile socially cleansed fishing theme park for DFLs [down from Londoners].” However, many locals don’t agree with this ranking and it was actually named as one of the UK’s best places to live in March 2024, after the survey came out in February 2024.

TikTok user, @twinmum, said: “Falmouth is my home town, it has a wealth of independent shops, restuarants, as well as hourly ferry trips to St Mawes; there are beach cafes open throughout the year, beach sauna and coastal walks.”
Someone else said: “Whoever wrote this clearly doesn’t like Devon and Cornwall then? I’m sure there are far worse, depressing places.”

A TripAdvisor user, also wrote about Falmouth: “Falmouth is such a great town, full of things to see and do. The ferry to St Mawes is fun, and St Mawes itself is a pretty village with a lovely castle.
“Or stay in Falmouth, where you can admire the world’s third largest natural harbour, visit Pendennis Castle, go to one or more of the beaches, go to the excellent National Maritime Museum, enjoy the good range of shops in town and eat in one of several excellent restaurants and cafes and drink in one of the quayside pubs.”
Falmouth BID’s executive director Richard Wilcox previously said: “Falmouth has previously been cited as a Sunday Times ‘perennial favourite’ – and this year’s editorial concentration on including true communities, and places where people simply love living, makes it no surprise that Falmouth hits the right notes again.
“What is especially pleasing is to see so many of our excellent local businesses and cultural venues included and what they continually bring to the quality of life here, namechecked alongside the creativity that comes from the Falmouth University graduates who decide to settle here and set up brilliant initiatives.”
