Colin Jost is good at taking jokes in stride.
The “Saturday Night Live” head writer found himself as the butt of a very funny bit over the weekend. During “Weekend Update,” Jost was in a sketch poking fun at just how famous ― and well paid ― his wife, Scarlett Johansson, is.
Cast member Mikey Day appeared on “Update” as “Lord Gaga,” the make-believe husband of Lady Gaga, who pulled double duty as “SNL” host and musical guest on Saturday.
Jost joked that he had no idea that Lord Gaga even existed, to which Day replied in character that “of course there is.”
“How do you think she became a lady? She married a lord. That’s how she became Gaga, whereas I was simply ‘Born This Way,’” Day said, referencing one of Gaga’s biggest hits.
Day as Lord Gaga continued to jokingly call his wife’s music talents just a “hobby” for her, pretending to be ignorant of all of her incredible success. When Jost pointed out she brought in a lot of money from her music, Day simply couldn’t believe it would be more than he made.
“Can you imagine, Colin, a man whose wife makes more money than he?” Day said as Jost turned to face the camera. “Can you imagine? Oh, the shame he would feel!”
“Imagine, Colin, if I was sitting here on television behind this desk, staring at that camera, the world staring back at me knowing that my wife’s income dwarfs my own! I would die,” Day said, as Jost nearly broke with the pointed nod to Johansson’s success. “Oh, I would die! What a living nightmare! What a nightmare.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Oh, now tell me ― what does your wife do?” Day said, as the sketch came to a close.
Johansson was named the world’s highest-paid actress in 2018 and 2019 by Forbes, earning $40.5 million and $56 million, respectively.
Money aside, Johansson surely appreciated that her husband was the butt of this “Weekend Update” bit.
