Canada is ‘ready to fight’ Trump as new Prime Minister declares ‘these are dark days’

Canada’s next prime minister Mark Carney has warned his country is ‘always ready’ to fight’ as its trade war with the continues.

Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England, will take over from current leader after the leader of ‘s Liberal Party. The incoming PM, who is expected to be sworn in next week, will arrive in office to tense relations with US President , who has continually threatened to impose high tariffs on Canadian goods.

He has also made repeated comments about making Canada the 51st US state. “If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100% certain that they’d become a state,” Trump said recently.

The move has not sat well with Canadians, and Carney has made it clear he will not stand for Trump’s comments. Speaking after his victory in a clip posted to the social media platform , he said: “Canada never ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.

“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.”

Carney also warned Canada would “win” the increasingly tense trade war between the two countries. “The Americans, they should make no mistake. In trade as in hockey, Canada will win.”

Last week, Trump announced a 25% tax on all Canadian and Mexican goods, a plan that was quickly pause. This suspension will run until April 2, at which point the president has hinted he could impose even higher tariff rates.

Canada and the US have always been close allies and trading partners, but tensions have continued to rise as Trudeau retaliated by matching the US president’s tariffs and stressing that Canada will remain its own country.

Trump has even in the US this year amid the trade war. “I hate to predict things like that,” he said.

“There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing. And there are always periods of, it takes a little time. It takes a little time, but I think it should be great for us.”

In harrowing comments regarding the US president, Carney – who is expected to be sworn in early next week – declared Canada could “no longer trust” the US and urged his countrymen to “pull together”.

“I know these are dark days,” he said. “Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust. We’re getting over the shock, but let us never forget the lessons: we have to look after ourselves and we have to look out for each other. We need to pull together in the tough days ahead.”

Commenting on Carney’s speech, X users rallied around the new PM. One wrote: “He’s not f***ing around!” while another added: “Mark Carney will wipe the floor with Trump on the public stage and it won’t even be close.

“He did a brilliant job as Governor of the Bank of England, before that was Governor of the Bank of Canada. He is one of the World’s leading economists and will be a stand up ally to Europe and other free thinking sovereign nations.”
