Experts at have revealed the simple ways you can use leftover coffee grounds in the garden this Spring.

Each year, an estimated six million tonnes of coffee grounds are discarded, mostly ending up in landfill or being burned.

Former royal gardener Jack Stooks – who previously worked at Highgrove Estate – has shared his insights with Friend on the surprising, lesser-known ways that coffee can be used to benefit your garden.

It can be used as fertiliser, he said: “Like most fertilisers, it consists of the elements NPK, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. 

“You can sprinkle it all over the borders for home use. As you don’t tend to have too much of it, you just find an area within the border, and be selective in small areas, until all of the borders have been covered.”

Jack added that can also be good for helping to bring worms into your garden which can help soil overall.

Worms enhance nutrient availability in your soil and can help with moisture retention.

But coffee grounds are also good at getting rid of insects such as mosquitos which will also have benefits for your .

You can also use leftover to mulch with – it can be used to create a thick mulch to place around plants.

Jack said: “This can be used in the same way that you would use leaf mould or woodchip in the garden, so to suppress weeds, lock in moisture and act as a physical barrier to the wind and sun.”

If you’re looking for other ways to use leftover coffee, there are plenty of ways to get creative and put it to use in other parts of your home.

You can use it to make body scrubs or you can use it in the shower or the bath. 

By simply saving your leftover and using it in your garden, you could transform your outdoor space for no added cost.
