Gardener shares how to repair thin and bare patches on lawns for ‘lush’ grass come spring (Image: Tom Strowlger)

I am excited to be sowing new grass seed into thin and bare patches, to thicken the up to create a lush lawn for spring and summer. The lawn soil is soft and moist, and with temperatures gradually increasing we can start sowing grass seed to repair our lawns.

Winter takes its toll on our lawns, but as soon as spring arrives, we can get to work. I use my hand fork and fork to make holes about 1 to 2 cm deep, then sprinkle grass seed onto the patch using a mini handheld spreader. Lastly, I quilt the grass seed with some lawn dressing or topsoil.

The grass seed will settle between the soil of the ground and lawn dressing or topsoil quilt, and as temperatures rise, the seed will germinate and start to thicken our lawns up.

The grass seeds will germinate over a few weeks to a month, and once it does germinate, allow the new grass to fully establish before walking on it. Then, we have a lush lawn to enjoy in the warmer months.
