While many gardeners turn to chemical treatments that promise to eradicate moss, these can harm soil and be dangerous for the wildlife that relies on your garden for survival.

Instead Monty Don has shared an easy way to keep you grass free from moss – and all you need is a fork.

He explained that the “answer” to moss is to work on it at least once a year by sticking a fork in the ground and wiggling it about and repeating the process every six inches or so – this is what’s known as aeration.

Once you’ve used the fork, mix up equal portions of sieved topsoil, sharp sand and leaf mould or compost, before giving the grass a “good scratch” with a rake.

Other ways to get rid of moss in your lawn include:

Scarifying your lawn

Scarifying is the process of removing thatch, moss, and debris from a lawn to improve aeration and promote healthier grass growth.

Like a deep clean for your grass, it removes moss, thatch and dead grass. Using a rake or a powered scarifier, this process will clear out the unwanted buildup, making way for healthier, stronger grass to take over.

Use dish soap

Lawn care experts at Joe’s Lawn Care suggests a more unusual way of removing moss.

They explained: “I know this sounds odd, but mixing 60ml of dish soap into four-and-a-half litres of water and then filling up a hand sprayer is one of the most incredible moss-killing recipes you could ever come across.”

Spray the mixture on any patches of moss and wait a couple of days for the moss to turn brown and dry up completely.

Try iron suplhate

Iron sulphate (ferrous sulphate) is also often touted to be an effective option, helping to kill moss and green up the grass.

When applied, it turns moss black within hours by breaking down its cell structure, making it easy to rake out. Additionally, it strengthens grass by providing essential nutrients, helping it outcompete moss in the long run.

With these expert tips, you can prepare your garden for a lush and vibrant spring season. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a novice, a bit of preparation now will guarantee a thriving green grass in the coming months.
