It’s finally starting to get warmer here in the UK, meaning it’s the perfect time to give your home a good scrub down in preparation for spring. The bathroom, often one of the messiest rooms in the house, might require a bit of extra TLC to get it sparkling again.

One very common problem is limescale and hard water stains, especially in the toilet. These chalky marks left in the toilet bowl can make the room look unhygienic even when it’s clean, and they aren’t always the easiest to get rid of. However, before you splash out on a pricey chemical cleaner, take a look inside your fridge – as you might already have the solution lurking in there.

The experts at luxury bathroom retailer Sanctuary Bathrooms say that there’s one popular drink that can also work wonders when it comes to cleaning your toilet – and that’s cola.

The acidity in this fizzy beverage effectively breaks down limescale and hard water stains without the need for harsh chemicals, and they say it can actually work better than these cleaning products.

A bottle of cola from costs as little as 60p too, making it an extremely cost-effective hack as well.

Don’t miss… [UPDATE]

How to clean your toilet with cola

Getting rid of limescale stains in your toilet couldn’t be any simpler. All you need to do is pour a few glasses of the stuff directly into the toilet bowl, ensuring the liquid covers all the stained areas.

Allow the cola to work its magic for a few hours, or ideally overnight. The acids will break down limescale and grime.

Then in the morning, use a toilet brush to scrub away any remaining stains, and flush for a sparkling clean finish.

However, it’s not just your toilet that can benefit from being cleaned with a cheap bottle of cola. There are several other areas in your bathroom that it can be used on, according to the experts.

Shower grout

Mould thrives in shower grout, making it a tricky area to clean. Use white vinegar or baking soda and scrub with a toothbrush for the best results. This helps break down the mould and restore grout to its original look.

Taps and showers

To get rid of limescale buildup, soak an old cloth in lemon juice or vinegar, wrap it around the taps, and leave it for an hour. For shower heads, soak them in a vinegar-water mixture overnight to remove deposits and improve water flow.

Shower glass

An unusual but effective cleaning hack is using white wine to clean shower glass. Simply pour it onto the glass, let it sit for 30 minutes, then wipe it away with a soft cloth for a streak-free shine.
