Looking for a book to read this March? Emma Straub, the author of “All Adults Here,” a Read With Jenna pick, and various other novels, is here to find a book for you.
Her picks including a book-to-movie adaptation and a collection of short stories from an author she calls a “10/10.”
Straub, who also owns the Brooklyn bookstore Books Are Magic, has stopped by the 3rd Hour of TODAY frequently to share her picks, including the books she likes to give as gifts and books to read if you enjoyed her novel “All Adults Here.”
Best Read for Women’s History Month
‘Jane Austen’s Bookshelf’ by Rebecca Romney
Jane Austen was not the only woman writer of her time. Rebecca Romney, a rare book collector, looks into Austen’s literary influences.
“Your favorite author’s favorite authors! This is a perfect read for Women’s History Month, because there are so many women authors whose stories have been lost,” Straub said.
Best Romance
‘Comedic Timing’ by Upasna Barath
Straub called this new romance from the imprint 831 Stories “sexy.”
“All the books are these slim little bites, so beautifully designed,” she said of 831 Stories. This book is about a woman who moves to New York fresh off a breakup and finds a new love – but maybe too fast.
Best Book to Screen
‘Mickey7’ by Edward Ashton
Bong-Joon Ho, the director of “Parasite,” is adapting the movie version of “Mickey 17.” Straub said this “sci-fi romp” is full of interesting social commentary – and clones and outer space, too.
Best nostalgic read
‘Pure Innocent Fun’ by Ira Madison III
Straub recommends this collection of essays, comparing Ira Madison III to Chuck Klosterman. In the book, Madison explores moments from his career as a pop culture commentator and his coming of age as a Black gay man in Milwaukee.
“It’s pop culture commentary at its finest,” she said of the book. “When I read it, I laughed so often that it got annoying to the people around me.”
What Emma’s Reading
‘Show Don’t Tell’ by Curtis Sittenfeld
Straub said Sittenfeld, the author of books like “Prep” and “Eligible,” is “just the best.”
