Mirra Andreeva is back in action after . Aged 17, the Russian became the youngest player ever to win a WTA 1000 tournament. But Andreeva has now revealed that she was also meant to enter the doubles draw.
The world No. 11 regularly plays alongside compatriot Diana Shnaider – they even won a silver medal at the Olympics. However, the Russian duo didn’t appear in the draw together in Dubai, and Andreeva has now explained the hilarious reason for their absence.
“You know, the reason we didn’t play Dubai was not because we decided to, you know, have rest. It’s because we forgot to sign [up],” Andreeva smiled.
“It’s been our second time, our second mistake like this already. So we’re both going to continue improving with that.”
Andreeva and Shnaider did remember to enter the doubles draw in Indian Wells this fortnight. They will meet Laura Siegemund and Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round.
Opening up on their future doubles plans, the 17-year-old continued: “I’m super excited to play doubles with her.
“I feel like we have great chemistry on the court, and we have fun playing doubles with each other.

“So we’re going to continue playing big tournaments, and then we’re going to talk and see which tournaments we want to play, which tournaments we just want to take some rest and play only singles.
“Of course, I hope that she’s also having fun with me on the court. But yeah, I do, and I hope that we’re going to continue to have fun and to play great together.”
Andreeva won’t mind that she missed out on playing doubles in Dubai as she went on an incredible run in the singles draw, taking out and en route to the title.
The world No. 11 was cheered on by her coach, former champion Conchita Martinez. The retired Spanish player looked visibly nervous at times in Andreeva’s box throughout the week, and she was delighted when her player lifted the trophy.
The pair went for dinner after Andreeva’s historic triumph at WTA 1000 level, and the teenager has now shared her coach’s heartwarming reaction.
“We spent a nice time talking, and, you know, seeing what both of us felt during the final,” Andreeva said.
“You know, first thing she told me, she’s like, ‘Mirra, I’m super proud of you, well done’.
“I was also super thankful to her because she did some nice and good work with me during the week in Dubai and overall.
“I know that I can be tough sometimes, but, you know, she was strong and she was also, you know, super understandable and supportive in that way.”
Andreeva will be hoping to carry her momentum in Indian Wells. As the ninth seed in the singles draw, she received a bye into the second round and will face Varvara Gracheva.
