Olympia, , where the weather reaches a refreshing 16C in April, is ideal for those looking to avoid the blistering summer heat. Known as the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, this in mainland is often overlooked by tourists. Still, it offers an incredible variety of historical landmarks and fascinating museums. “The Greek city of Olympia can get incredibly hot over summer, but at the moment, temperatures are around 12 degrees Celsius,” she said.

Joanne said: “Widely known as the birthplace of the ancient Olympic games, this city is steeped in history just waiting to be discovered this shoulder season.”

With such mild temperatures, it’s the perfect time to explore without the usual crowds of peak summer tourists, especially considering many landmarks are open-air.

In addition to the iconic Olympic ruins, which include the ancient stadium where the first Olympic Games took place, visitors can also explore the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.

The museum houses an extensive collection of sculptures, artefacts, and ancient Olympic relics that offer a deeper insight into the history and grandeur of the Games.

One of the standout exhibits is the statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, made by the Greek sculptor Phidias around 435 BC.

Olympia also boasts the Temple of Hera, a stunning example of ancient Greek architecture and one of the oldest surviving temples in the area.

This impressive structure was dedicated to Hera, the goddess of marriage and family, and was once the site where the sacred Olympic flame was lit before being carried to the Games.

For a change of pace, the Archimedes Museum is another hidden gem in Olympia. It honours the brilliant ancient Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes, whose discoveries laid the foundations for modern science.

The museum features interactive exhibits that bring his inventions and ideas to life, offering an educational and fun experience for all ages.
