There was liberal outcry as Starmer announced cutting the foreign aid budget, and lefty Gen Z are making their opinion about defence spending known.

The Express’s Senior Political Correspondent Christain Calgie referenced Gov.uk’s recent poll, which revealed only 11% of Gen Z would fight for Britain.

Calgie explained he sympathises with some of Gen Z’s frustrations: “As I’ve argued for a very long time, the social contract is broken.”

Calgie said: “Young people get a very, very bad deal from the state. We pay for our education, we’re indebted, we have no opportunity to get on the housing ladder, why on earth should we sacrifice our life to defend something which is increasingly difficult to believe in?”

The Mirror’s Political Editor Lizzy Buchan, used Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni’s argument as to the importance of foreign aid.

Buchan said: “One of the key drivers of people coming across the channel in small boats is being displaced in their countries.. So if we use the Meloni strategy of sending aid and trying to stop people from leaving”.

In regards to the increased defence spending which cutting foreign aid would provide, Calgie defended Gen Z further.

He confessed he is “besotted” with the idea that “if migrants make it across the channel, they can get British citizenship if they go and fight in for a year.”

Speaking on the weekly podcast, Calgie proposed migrants should: “Show your dedication to Britain [by fighting] and then come back [as citizens].”

To combat the measly 11% of 18-28 year olds willing to fight for Britain, Calgie proposed that by offering British citizenship in return for a year’s service: “We clear all the hotels out. We disincentivise the illegal crossings, and we get thousands of people to go and fight in in the winter.”

Calgie’s suggestion certainly provides an alternative to ’s controversial national conscription service.
