, known for their large and colourful blooms, can thrive with the right , especially one rich in potassium. The prime time to feed hydrangeas is in spring, just before they start producing summer .
Wendy, a guru from WMDesignHouse, has shared her flower fertiliser concoction, which she assures will “give your flowers a boost of nutrients without breaking the bank.” The main ingredient in this homemade fertiliser is banana peels. She explained: “Banana peels provide a natural boost of much-needed potassium. “Potassium is crucial for overall plant health, helping regulate water uptake, promoting strong root development, and enhancing flower and fruit production.

“Because banana peels decompose relatively slowly, they are an excellent source of long-term plant nutrition.”
Not only does banana fertiliser promote “bigger and more vibrant hydrangeas,” but it also repels pests like spider mites and aphids, which are put off by their scent.
Gardeners will need a jar with a lid, banana peels, and water to make the fertiliser.

Start by saving your ripe banana peels in a container. When you’ve accumulated enough – at least three to four – snip the peels into pieces with scissors and keep them in a jar.
Fill the jar with water until the peels are fully submerged, then secure the lid and let the concoction steep for three to seven days. Your homemade banana fertiliser can be kept in the fridge for up to a fortnight.
When watering your hydrangeas, blend one part of the banana fertiliser with five parts of water in a watering can, then sprinkle your plants with this diluted mix.
Also, you can bury scraps of banana peel around the bottom of your blooms, where they will decompose slowly, delivering a consistent supply of potassium to boost your hydrangeas.
This homemade fertiliser is a brilliant way to reduce food waste and a superbly easy method for promoting larger blooms on your hydrangeas once summer rolls around.
As Wendy pointed out: “You can also use banana peel tea on other types of plants, but it is especially beneficial for flowering plants.”
