“Materials that are easy to clean and maintain, yet offer the beauty of natural looks, are highly sought after,” he says.

Cosentino is a Spanish company that makes and distributes surfaces worldwide. Here, Carrillo shares what’s hot in surface design this year.

Heavy duty surfaces

Fluted wall surfaces are also gaining traction, adding texture and depth to interiors, making them a standout feature in any room.

Sustainability and design in high-end interiors

Sustainability is no longer just a preference — it’s a priority, says Carrillo. More homeowners are making conscious choices, seeking out materials that reflect their environmental values. Cosentino uses recycled materials and renewable energy in its manufacturing processes.

“Ninety-nine per cent of the water used in its industrial park is recycled. The company also incorporates recycled materials into its products and provides LEED certification and points for both Silestone and Dekton.”

Inspired by the natural stones used in European architecture for centuries, warm, earthy tones like limestone, marble, and travertine remain favourites for kitchens and bathrooms. These colours and textures create an inviting atmosphere while maintaining a refined, elegant feel.

Technology’s role in home surfaces

Advancements in technology are redefining home surfaces, says Carrillo. From invisible induction cooktops to wireless charging embedded into countertops, the future of surface design is sleek and functional.

Elegance achieved by using a single surface

Achieving a refined and modern look comes down to cohesion, says Carrillo. Using a single surface solution throughout a space — for countertops, walls or vanities — creates a streamlined effect that feels intentional and polished.

For those looking to infuse their interiors with a touch of European charm, selecting surfaces that emulate classic materials like marble and limestone is key. Modern mineral surfaces provide the same elegant look without the maintenance headaches, making them ideal for contemporary living.

Cosentino in Vancouver

Cosentino has been part of the Vancouver design community since 2023, with its Burnaby showroom and warehouse serving the region since 2015. Vancouver was a natural choice for expansion due to its buzzy architecture and interior design scene. The city’s emphasis on sustainability and innovation aligns with Cosentino’s mission to offer cutting-edge, environmentally responsible surface solutions, he says.

How to choose the right surface

When selecting a surface, it’s important to understand the differences between natural stone, quartz surfaces and ultracompact surfaces. Natural stone is great for its uniqueness and lasting beauty but requires regular sealing and maintenance, says Carrillo.

Quartz surfaces are durable, non-porous and come in many colours and patterns, so they are ideal for high-traffic areas. Ultracompact surfaces are resistant to heat, scratches, and UV rays, so can be used indoors and outdoors.

“Each of these materials has its unique advantages, textures, thicknesses and designs, allowing homeowners, builders, designers and industry stakeholders to choose the best option based on their specific needs, budget and preferences.”
