With the major season just around the corner and attention gradually turning to the Masters, talk is expected to return to the subject of rejigging the golfing calendar. The placement of the Players Championship remains a key part of discussions, and the topic could potentially reignite and Phil Mickelson’s feud over how the end of the season could be revamped to make it a more exciting spectacle.
Calls for a more climactic finish to the golf season have been growing among players and fans alike, with some proposing the Open Championship as the potential final event. However, this idea clashes with the ‘s current schedule.
Golf writer and author Kyle Porter put forward the idea of making the Players Championship the last tournament of the year previously as he believes it would draw more attention due to its excitement level.
On the Smylie Kaufman Show, Porter explained: “The Players Championship is extraordinary, it’s amazing. I think it’s like in terms of my interest and intrigue, it’s right up there with a major. You can call it whatever you want, but I’m locked in like I am during US Open week.”
Porter suggested shifting the Players Championship from March to August to cap off the golf season with a bang. Despite concerns about increased heat for the players, Porter argued: “When you have something that is that good if you’re any business, the best thing is to double down on it.”

The proposed change would almost certainly cause controversy, reminiscent of when the Players Championship was previously moved from May to March, which left players divided over their preferred dates for playing at TPC Sawgrass.
Three-time major champion Spieth has a preference for the Players Championship to take place in May, citing the firmer conditions that suit his game. He’s even hinted at being amenable to an August shift.
Spieth said: “I love this place. I love the golf course. But if you’re not on – there’s a lot of small areas, small areas to hit your tee shots, small areas to hit your second shots, and you’ve really got to think through the place and let it come to you.”
On the other hand, Mickelson is in favour of the event remaining in March, believing that the course isn’t meant to be played when it’s firm.
With conversations still ongoing between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour to settle their ongoing feud – and even getting involved to try and settle the score – it remains to be seen what changes could be made if a truce is reached.
