As the weather is finally getting warmer and signs of spring are here, it could be time to pack away bulky jackets in favour of a lighter layer. A classic trench coat is the ideal piece to see you through the tricky transitional period.

M&S is a go-to for quality staples that last from year to year and its trenches are no exception. One style in particular consistently gets plaudits from shoppers. The £79 has a classic longline silhouette, with all the military-inspired details you’d expect from a trench coat. It’s double-breasted, with buttons on the shoulders and cuffs, and can be worn with or without the waistbelt (or you can knot it at the back).

comes in a wide range of sizes – 6 to 24 – and in beige or black. For me, the beige is the most versatile: I’d throw it on over a T-shirt and jeans on the weekend, but equally wear it to work with a shirt and tailored trousers. Plus it will look great with spring pastels and brights. Note that this one is only water-repellant in light showers so it perhaps isn’t one to reach for in a deluge.

Another M&S shopper was pleased with their choice to invest in coat, saying: “Love this coat, [it’s] so classy, the material, the length, the fit, everything. It was a splurge and a treat but with my Sparks discount it’s worth every penny.” [SIC]

Last week, Marks and Spencer launched a surprise sale on clothing, cutting the prices on hundreds of items, and many of the items sold out over the weekend, but don’t overlook the brand’s new collection either – the new-in section is filled with new items for the current season that still have plenty of sizes in stock, like the .
