Child killed in vehicle collision in Chilliwack

The three-year-old child was hit at the intersection of Vedder Road and Petewawa Road at about 10 a.m. Wednesday.

A three-year-old child died Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle at an intersection in Chilliwack.

Chilliwack RCMP say that at 10 a.m. officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Vedder and Petewawa roads.

Emergency responders arrived and provided medical assistance but the toddler died.

Police say the driver of the vehicle is co-operating with the investigation. Police said the intersection has been shut down in all directions. This closure will impact access to the Vedder Bridge from Vedder Road, as well as access to Petewawa Road from Keith Wilson Road.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family and loved ones during this unimaginable time,” said Insp. Harinder Kheleh of the Chilliwack RCMP. “This is a heartbreaking incident that affects the entire community.”

Police said no further details will be released at this time. It’s not clear whether the child was crossing the street alone or with parents or guardians.

Anyone who witnessed, or has information that may be related to the incident, is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.

In a separate traffic collision, three people were taken to hospital after a head-on crash near Parksville.

A statement from B.C. Highway Patrol on Wednesday said three people, including a child, were taken to hospital with non-life- threatening injuries after the crash Monday on Highway 19.

Police say a white Chevrolet pickup crossed the median from the southbound lanes and struck a grey Toyota Prius going north, severely damaging both vehicles.

Police say they’re still investigating the cause of the collision and “nothing has been ruled out.”
