admits he doesn’t know whether he will still be head coach when the club finally reap the rewards of the mammoth rebuild he has started with . The Portuguese tactician has landed at in one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s history, sharing a long-term vision with and his new-look hierarchy.

However, none of Amorim’s predecessors have lasted long enough to complete their respective projects across the past decade. United have grown a reputation for sacking managers after around two years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement. And Amorim accepts that he might not be around to see the outcome of the idea he has committed to in line with INEOS’ plan to restore the club’s former glories.

“I understand what people are saying because if you look at our team playing and the results, it’s hard to imagine big things in this moment for our club,” Amorim told after Sunday’s FA Cup exit to Fulham.

“But in the darkest moments, we have to have a light and a path, and that is clear here. I’m sure.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be here [when United succeed], but the way we are thinking about things, we are going to return, and we are going to win in the future.

“But then it’s a risk. We are doing a lot of things, we are not winning games, and if you’re not winning games, sometimes you have to change people. And we know that.

However, Amorim insists that staying true to his long-term vision and suffering in the short-term is more important than glossing over issues with silverware in his maiden campaign.

He added: “People are looking at the Europa League as a unique competition that we can win.

“There’s also the connection with the Champions League. But to tell you the truth, I think we have bigger things to think about.

“I know it sounds weird to say that, but we have things we are trying to do here that are going to be more important than winning a cup in this moment.

“I know the responsibility that we have to fight for every trophy, but in this moment, we are trying to build something that is going more than winning any trophies this season.”
